Schwerin (dpa / mv) – Bird watchers in the north-east have discovered the first white storks that have returned in 2023. The first two animals were sighted on Saturday and Monday in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, said the chairman of the Ornithological Working Group Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (OAMV), Klaus-Dieter Feige, on Monday in Schwerin.
Usually the first animals are not seen until the beginning of April when they return from their winter quarters. Feige attributes the early sighting to both the mild weather – which is already providing enough food and thawed soil – and to strong westerly winds. The latter would give the animals wintering in Spain a tailwind on their eastward migration.
