The work on a new platform on the Königsstuhl on Rügen had been delayed several times – and with it the closure of the old vantage point. An important part is standing – even after a delay.
Sassnitz (dpa/mv) – An important intermediate step was taken on Thursday in the construction of a new viewing platform above the Königsstuhl on Rügen. In the late afternoon, the more than 40 meter long support mast was erected by a large crane. The erection had been postponed by one day due to lengthy preparations. “The engineers are satisfied,” said the manager of the National Park Center Königsstuhl, Mark Ehlers, in the early evening.
According to him, after an inspection, the mast should be tilted further forward from an angle of about 90 degrees in the evening, i.e. lowered a little again. The mast was then to be temporarily braced with retaining ropes and detached from the crane by industrial climbers.
According to earlier information from the National Park Center, the elliptical tour is to be advanced on a slide bit by bit in the coming weeks and finally lowered into its final position. In the future, it will hang from the support mast, floating freely above the 118-metre-high chalk cliff and open to visitors in the spring of next year. The previous vantage point on the rock was cordoned off at the end of September after a ceremonial finale to protect the area from erosion.
Interested parties are invited to inspect the construction progress on site. According to the National Park Center, admission to the visitor center including the exhibition is reduced by around 30 percent until further notice. The Königsstuhl can also still be admired from a temporary viewing platform.
