Grabow (dpa / mv) – According to its own statements, the environmental organization BUND has lodged an objection to the clearing of initially 40 hectares of forest for a business park on the A14 near Grabow. The BUND said on Wednesday in Schwerin that the approval contradicts the state forest law, the federal climate protection law and nature conservation law. The planned replacement plantings could not compensate for the damage. The German Forest Protection Association in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has also lodged an objection.
The small town of Grabow in the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim wants to set up a business park on the site, which is to receive the “green business park” label. The state government has given a funding commitment of 38 million euros for this.
The city decided that the commercial area would later be expanded by a further 90 hectares. According to BUND state director Corinna Cwielag, a total of 130 hectares of forest would be cleared and sealed.
From the point of view of the environmental organization, there are alternatives on the A14 without deforestation for the planned business park. According to Cwielag, the environmental impact assessment identified other locations as more suitable. According to the state forest law, forest may only be cleared if projects cannot be implemented on other areas.
The environmentalists argue that the planned forest clearing is also opposed to the legal climate protection of the Federal Republic of Germany. According to this, public planners would have to take the climate impacts of a project into account. “The destruction of the forest ecosystem over such a large area is anachronistic in view of climate change,” emphasized Cwielag. This also has an impact on water retention and groundwater recharge. The forest’s contribution to heat reduction and the formation of cold air is lost.
