Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) – The conductor and cellist Daniel Geiss (43) will be the new General Music Director of the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic in September 2023. The Theater und Orchester GmbH Neubrandenburg/Neustrelitz announced on Thursday that he will succeed Sebastian Tewinkel. Tewinkel has been general music director in Neubrandenburg since 2015. According to earlier information, he did not want to extend his contract again.
After numerous candidates had been invited to take the lead in the past few months, the 68-strong orchestra has now decided by a clear majority in favor of Geiss, who was born in Essen, as the new general music director, according to Theater und Orchester GmbH. He studied conducting, cello and chamber music at Indiana University Bloomington in the United States.
In addition to his work as a cellist, including in the orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival, Geiss has been active as a conductor for almost two decades. Among other things, he conducted the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne, the South Westphalia Philharmonic and the Bavarian Radio Orchestra. Geiss has been artistic and musical director of the Belgrade Chamber Orchestra and conductor of the BrixenClassics Festival for several years.
In the summer of 2023, 45-year-old Maik Priebe will also be the new director of acting at Theater und Orchester GmbH.
