Greifswald (dpa/mv) – In Greifswald, hundreds of people demonstrated against a planned container accommodation for 500 refugees. According to police estimates, around 500 people gathered on Monday evening at the site of the planned accommodation in the Baltic Sea district of Greifswald. About 30 people gathered for a counter-demonstration. According to a police spokesman, around 20 participants from the right-wing scene were among the demonstrators who protested against the plans.
In a school next to the property in question, a meeting of the Ostseeviertel district council took place on Monday evening, at which the plans were to be discussed. Because of the large crowd, access had to be limited. There was a crowd at the school gate.
The Lord Mayor of Greifswald, Stefan Fassbinder (Greens), also took part in the meeting at short notice and was confronted with the clear displeasure of the citizens about the plans both in front of the school building and at the meeting. He said there was originally supposed to be more time to discuss the plans. However, the district put pressure on it and the original schedule could no longer be met.
