Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) – After a large series of fires in Neubrandenburg with destroyed boat sheds and millions in damage, the police have identified a suspect. However, the man died recently, as the “Nordkurier” reported on Wednesday, citing the Neubrandenburg public prosecutor’s office. The case took a surprising turn.
The public prosecutor’s office confirmed on request that the investigations had justified the suspicion of a specific person. “However, the person recorded as the accused recently died,” said a spokeswoman. The proceedings should therefore be discontinued “because of a procedural obstacle”. The injured parties would be informed of this at short notice.
Since April, around 70 of the 400 boat sheds at the Oberbach facility have been destroyed or badly damaged in three fires. A major fire destroyed almost 60 shelters in the last two rows alone. The total damage was estimated at at least around 1.4 million euros. The police had investigated because of intentional arson.
After the fires, the city had to clean up the ruins and contaminated materials such as oil, asbestos, and debris from machinery. This alone cost more than 400,000 euros.
