Greifswald (dpa/mv) – The first commander of the Ukrainian fleet after the founding of Ukraine lives as a refugee in Greifswald. After Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Boris Kozhyn fled to the Hanseatic city, the city announced on Friday. He has been living with his wife in Western Pomerania since May this year. On Friday, he and his wife met Mayor Stefan Fassbinder (Greens), both of whom thanked him for the admission.

The 78-year-old reportedly had a long military career in the former Soviet Union Navy and was the first commander of the Ukrainian fleet after his home country gained independence from April 1992 to October 1993. His wife is a doctoral student in the field of public law and works at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg.
