Greifswald (dpa/mv) – incumbent Stefan Fassbinder (Greens) and Madeleine Tolani (CDU) are in the race for Greifswald town hall in the runoff. According to preliminary final results, Fassbinder received 48.5 percent of the votes in Sunday’s mayoral election. His challenger from the CDU came to 33.1 percent. Like the other candidates, they missed the necessary result of more than 50 percent. A majority of the votes is enough to win the runoff in two weeks.
Konstantin Zirwick (FDP) received 2.8 percent, Ina Schuppa-Wittfoth (Die Basis) 8.1 percent, Lea Alexandra Siewert (Die Party) 2.1 percent, Gamal Khalil (individual applicant) 2.7 percent and Daniel Küther (individual applicant ) 2.7 percent. Voter turnout was 40.9 percent.
According to his own party, the 55-year-old historian Fassbinder is the first and only mayor of the Greens in East Germany and is supported by the SPD, the left and the animal protection party. The 41-year-old Tolani is a law professor in Wismar. The mayor of Greifswald is elected for seven years.
