Usedom (dpa / mv) – A thatched cottage in Karlshagen on Usedom was struck by lightning during a thunderstorm and burned down. A family of five from Thuringia was awakened by a loud bang early Tuesday morning and immediately left the house unharmed, the police said. The lightning set the roof on fire. Several fire brigades tried for hours to prevent the flames from spreading to the neighboring holiday homes. At least one other roof in the terraced house complex was affected, said a police spokesman. According to initial estimates, the damage was estimated at 500,000 euros.
