Neustrelitz (dpa / mv) – The 60-year-old found dead in his apartment in Neustrelitz (Mecklenburg Lake District) was probably stabbed to death. A spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday. The 38-year-old suspect, who is already in custody on suspicion of manslaughter, confessed to a knife attack against the victim’s neck. The men had previously drunk alcohol and got into an argument.

The exact motive for the act on Saturday night has not yet been clarified. The 38-year-old is an acquaintance of the victim and is said to have lived in the 60-year-old’s apartment at times. He had to give a blood sample, how high the alcohol level was, but it is not yet known.

On the night of Saturday, a fire alarm had been triggered in the three-storey house in the Kiefernheide district. When the fire department arrived, the stairwell was filled with smoke. Comrades opened the door of a lower apartment, put out the fire and found the 60-year-old tenant, who had no burn injuries but was dead.

Neighbors led the investigators on the trail of the 38-year-old from Neustrelitz, who was arrested a short time later. An autopsy will be conducted to determine exactly what caused the death. The fire damage in the apartment is said to be minimal.
