The state and trade unions are hoping for the construction of converter platforms for offshore wind power in Rostock and thus for many jobs. However, the necessary commitment from the Ministry of Defense is still a long time coming.

Rostock (dpa / mv) – It is still unclear whether the German Navy will release part of the naval arsenal in Rostock for lease. “In view of the significantly changed security situation and the high infrastructure requirements, the Bundeswehr’s interests in using the southern part of the property are currently being examined and examined,” said the Federal Ministry of Defense in Berlin.

On the former site of the MV shipyards in Warnemünde, the “Naval arsenal Warnow shipyard facility” has been under construction since August. The Bundeswehr wants to repair ships and boats there in the future.

The IG Metall trade union and the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Schwerin are still hoping for partial use for the construction of converter platforms for offshore wind power. The Belgian company Smulders could create up to 1,000 jobs in Rostock, said Daniel Friedrich from IG Metall Coast last week. Discussions are currently continuing between all parties involved.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs also recently said that the option would be pursued. The site of the naval arsenal is an attractive location because of the depth of the water and the direct, lock-free access to the open Baltic Sea.
