Ankershagen (dpa/mv) – Since Saturday, a new bronze bust on the grounds of the Heinrich Schliemann Museum in Ankershagen (Mecklenburg Lake District) has been reminiscent of what is probably Germany’s best-known archaeologist. The new monument stands for the awakening of that time and will stand next to the vicarage in which Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890) grew up as a child, said a museum spokeswoman at the unveiling on Saturday. The occasion is the anniversary year 2022, in which Schliemann’s 200th birthday is commemorated. The bust was designed by the sculptor Walther Preik (1932-2018). His sons completed them for the museum.

Schliemann was born on January 6, 1822 in Neubukow near Rostock, grew up in Ankershagen as a child of a pastor’s family and went to school in Neustrelitz, among other places. He became a successful businessman, lived among other things in Russia and later in Greece. Under the motto “Schliemann’s Worlds”, a show in Berlin also recalls his multifaceted work. The bust was financed in part by the Jost Reinhold Foundation.
