Rostock (dpa/mv) – The planning for the new building of the Rostock Volkstheater decided by the citizenry is progressing. The building is to be built at the western exit on Lange Straße/Bussebart in the city center with a view of the city harbor and Warnow, and the building application is to be submitted at the beginning of 2024, according to the responsible in-house municipal property management and development company of the Hanseatic and University City of Rostock (KOE) as the client.
The costs for the winning design by the Berlin office Hascher Jehle Architektur currently amount to around 184 million euros. The state has pledged 51 million euros. According to KOE boss Sigrid Hecht, the old theater building – a makeshift solution since the Second World War – is dilapidated and can no longer be renovated. “There is no alternative to this new building.”
