Schwerin (dpa / mv) – After the fire in a parking garage belonging to a shopping center in Schwerin, the police caught a suspect. The responsible district court issued an arrest warrant against the 24-year-old man, as the public prosecutor announced on Tuesday. There is a suspicion of serious arson.
The accused is said to have set fire to a car that had been parked for several months on Saturday. He is said to have smoked in the car and then started the fire inside. The parking garage was severely damaged by the heat generated by the completely burned-out vehicle. The damage to the building would still be assessed by a structural engineer.
A tip from a witness brought the officers to the trail of the man. The 24-year-old said he fell asleep while smoking and only woke up when the car caught fire. A supermarket also had to be evacuated because of the fire.
