Anklam/Wolgast (dpa/mv) – The police in Anklam (West Pomerania-Greifswald) honored five women and men for their courageous intervention in crimes. The honorees stand for many “silent heroes” who support the work of the police, said the head of the Anklam Criminal Police Office, Michael Kath, on Monday at the ceremony. The occasion was the “Day of Civil Courage”. The honorees received certificates and gifts in kind.
In April, one of the honorees and his dog caught a perpetrator in Torgelow who had tried to rape a woman in a wooded area. The victim was able to escape and call the 37-year-old witness. He caught the man and handed him over to the police.
A 56-year-old tourist from Brandenburg was also awarded. He and his wife ended a brutal handbag robbery in Ahlbeck on Usedom in January. He yelled at the perpetrator, who had assaulted and abused an elderly woman, so he stopped and fled without taking anything.
A 40-year-old witness was awarded for stopping a 10-year-old in Wolgast in June who was driving a car in the town and had already damaged several vehicles. It was said that this prevented even worse things from happening.
