Stralsund (dpa / mv) – At the end of the summer season, the renovation work on the Rügen bridge near Stralsund, which is important for holiday traffic, was resumed. Since Monday, the access has been closed for two weeks during the day. Car trips to and from Rügen are only possible on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. via the old Rügendamm, the State Office for Road Construction and Traffic in Rostock announced. The reason given was the continued exchange of electrical displays for traffic control above the roadway. As a result, the bridge was temporarily closed in June and last year.
At the same time as the work on the bridge, the federal highway 96 between Altefaehr and Bergen is to be further repaired. Motorists could switch to the parallel L296, it said. In the morning, in the evening and on the coming weekend, the Rügen bridge and the federal road are each passable. The work should be completed in 2023.
The traffic control system is used on the bridge, which has been expanded to three lanes, in order to change the direction of the third lane as required when traffic is high. According to the road authority, around 14,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day. In the summer season, the number is many times higher, especially on weekends.
