Greifswald (dpa / mv) – Green incumbent or CDU woman? On Sunday, the run-off election will decide who will run the Greifswald town hall for the next seven years. In the first ballot two weeks ago, incumbent Stefan Fassbinder narrowly missed the required share of votes of more than half (48.5 percent). Madeleine Tolani received the second most votes for the CDU (33.1 percent).

The historian Fassbinder is supported by the SPD and the left. The 55-year-old has been mayor of the fourth most populous city in the northeast since 2015. At that time he had won by only 15 votes and ousted the CDU from the town hall after 25 years. The 41-year-old Tolani is a law professor in Wismar and has been a member of the Greifswald citizenship since 2019.

Five other candidates are already out of the race after the first ballot.
