Greifswald (dpa/mv) – The current wave of illnesses in children is also causing full pediatrician practices in the north-east. “We are working on the attack. We have more patients a day than we have ever had before,” said the state association chairman of paediatricians, Andreas Michel, on Friday of the German Press Agency. He is part of a double practice in Greifswald, where there were 195 patients on Monday. Normally, “if it’s bad, it’s always like 100, 120”. In total there were 700 to 800 in the various pediatric practices in the city. Michel called it an “incredibly large number. We don’t really know that.”

The current wave of illness overshadows everything. You get the impression “that every child is sick at the moment”.

The reason is that the children are now catching up on infections. Because of the corona virus, they have worn masks in the past two years and been infected less often. “We now have very, very, very many flu cases – children who really have a high fever for a week.” In addition, there is the respiratory syncytial virus. Because of this pathogen, small children also have to go to the hospital regularly. One tries to process as much as possible on an outpatient basis in order to relieve the clinics. This also includes calling in children closely, sometimes several times a day.
