Rostock (dpa/mv) – In view of the scarce blood supplies, the Rostock University Medical Center (UMR) wants to solicit blood donations from students. The UMR announced on Thursday that the Unimedizin blood donation team wanted to take part in the campus day at the beginning of October.
The supply situation is tense and it is not always possible to buy urgently needed preparations, since too few people donate blood throughout Germany. Demographics make the situation particularly difficult in Germany and in the north-east. “On the one hand there are fewer young people who can donate and on the other hand there are more older patients who need blood supplies,” explained the director of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine, Thomas Thiele. A donation is not as costly as is often thought and everyone can be dependent on blood supplies themselves, it said.
