Rostock’s previous mayor moved to Schleswig-Holstein as a minister. A new mayor is now being sought. The Greens have pushed ahead with an applicant – now there is a candidate proposal from the SPD.
Rostock (dpa/mv) – In the search for a new mayor for Rostock, after the Greens, the SPD also brought an applicant into play. The district board of the Rostock SPD has proposed the 47-year-old Carmen-Alina Botezatu, as stated in a statement late Thursday evening. She has headed the Rostock State Building and Real Estate Office since 2020. At the general assembly on August 21, the members of the SPD in the Hanseatic city are to decide on Botezatu’s candidacy.
According to the announcement, the SPD district chairman Rainer Albrecht said: “After the abrupt departure of the mayor, Rostock now needs a real restart. Not with 1000 fixed ideas, none of which ignites, but with a solid Rostock plan that is consistently implemented. Don’t snap , but do it! This is exactly what Carmen-Alina Botezatu, as the successful manager of large-scale projects in Rostock, is a proven specialist for.
Born in Romania, she studied architecture and civil engineering and came to Germany in September 1990 and lives in Rostock with her husband and four children. According to the announcement, she said: “Rostock is growing. Together. That is my goal as mayor. With a modern, citizen-friendly administration, good and affordable housing, a strong economy and cultural diversity, we meet the challenges of our time!”
An early election of the mayor will take place in the Hanseatic city on November 13th. The reason for this is the surprising change of the previous Lord Mayor Claus Ruhe Madsen (independent) at the beginning of July as Economics Minister to Schleswig-Holstein.
The member of the Bundestag Claudia Müller (Greens) threw her hat in the ring last week as the first candidate for the mayor’s office. “The task is challenging, but also very attractive,” said the Rostock native of the German Press Agency. On August 2, the district association of the Greens will decide on the official nomination of Müller, who is currently the federal government’s coordinator for maritime industry and tourism. But she can be sure of broad support in the party, she said.
