Schwerin/Frankfurt am Main (dpa/mv) – According to an analysis by the German Reconstruction Loan Corporation (KfW), medium-sized companies in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are relatively heavily burdened by high energy costs. At 22 percent, the share of energy costs in sales among small and medium-sized companies in this country is particularly high, KfW announced on Wednesday in Frankfurt am Main. Only in Thuringia is the proportion even higher at a quarter.

The development bank mainly blames country-specific features and priorities for the different burdens. Accordingly, these include the degree of internationalization, the age of the company or investment activity.

Before the start of the Russian war of aggression, energy costs accounted for 9.1 percent of sales in the north-east – as of 2021 – according to KfW. The national average grew from 5.8 to 14 percent in the same period.
