Neuss/Torgelow (dpa/mv) – Young memory athletes from Torgelow (Mecklenburg Lake District) won both categories at the 20th North German Memory Championships at the weekend. As the organizers announced on Monday, Romy Hämling won the juniors and Susanne Lampe won the children, who are allowed to be up to 11 years old. The boarding school in Torgelow has been a stronghold in memory sports in Germany for years.
The 13-year-old Hämling started as the defending champion in Neuss (North Rhine-Westphalia) and won the memory heptathlon with 1797 points ahead of Max Maluche from Braunschweig, who scored 1288 points. Hämling comes from the Uckermark and also won the German championship in 2021.
The lamp from Waren an der Müritz won with 1291 points in the children’s class ahead of schoolmate Thedor Meusel with 1041 points, who started at the championship for the first time. A total of 27 participants in two age groups were at the start. The memory heptathlon consists of memorizing facts such as numbers, pictures, playing cards, words, names/faces or historical dates.
The best start with the winners from southern Germany at the German Memory Championships in autumn, which are planned in Lübeck. The German record for children in memorizing words is 82 words in five minutes in the correct order.
