Stralsund (dpa / mv) – In Saatel and Groß Mohrdorf (Vorpommern-Rügen district) several place-name signs have been stolen. In Groß Mohrdorf, for example, the entrance and exit signs are now missing, as the Stralsund police announced on Friday. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a trophy or a last-minute gift, the theft of such signs is not a trivial offense and can result in high penalties, it said.
Missing road signs could lead to accidents. Without a place-name sign, drivers might enter towns without braking and then be unable to brake on tight bends or endanger pedestrians. That’s why there are fines and imprisonment of up to five years for stealing street signs.
