The most striking meeting of Juan Carlos I’s trip to Europe finally took place, according to what he himself told business friends.
According to this environment consulted by EL MUNDO, Juan Carlos I was satisfied in Sanxenxo with the conversation he previously had in London with Carlos III, despite the evasions of the British Royal House about the existence of the meeting.
The former head of state described the conversation last Tuesday in the British capital as an informal and “cordial” talk without the expected solemnity of a private lunch. Carlos III was welcoming and interested in the reign experience of King Emeritus before his abdication, according to this story. Specifically, both talked about the difficulty of reigning in countries with pockets of independence such as Scotland in the United Kingdom and that it constitutes one of the challenges of the stage faced by the son of Elizabeth II.
Juan Carlos I thus fulfilled the objectives of his trip to London, which was completed with a visit to a private club -the Oswald of Mayfair- with British friends and attendance at the football match between Chelsea and Real Madrid at the Stamford Bridge stadium.
The version of the King Emeritus contrasts with the one exposed in those days by Buckingham Palace, residence of Carlos III, and the British Embassy in Madrid. The British Royal House told this newspaper that “it does not recognize” the existence of such a meeting, and the legation in Madrid, that “there was never confirmation.”
However, the meeting took place, according to Juan Carlos I, although with a private and informal nature outside any official agenda. In fact, it was the main reason for his trip to London, because both of them, who have always had a good personal and family relationship, wanted to see each other before the Coronation on May 6, according to the version of the former head of state. This would have fulfilled the program of the trip that this newspaper advanced on the 10th and which consisted of a first stage in London and a stay from Wednesday in the Galician town of Sanxenxo where he stayed at the home of the businessman Pedro Campos and held various meetings with friends while trying to prepare to compete with the Bribón in upcoming regattas.
Juan Carlos I told them that he will respect Zarzuela’s criteria of not repeating the trip in May, as the regattas are very close to the regional and municipal elections, which could turn his case into a campaign issue. He also assumed that he should be more discreet than on his previous trip at the request of his son.
But he does intend to return frequently from June to participate in the regattas. She does not appear to have health problems and has complete ease of movement as she has a private plane belonging to the Emirati royal family at her disposal. This time it was a Bombardier Global 5000.
With it he has also been able to travel to Vitoria before returning to Abu Dhabi. Her trusted dentist, Dr. Eduardo Anitua, scientific director of the BTI (Biotechnology Institute), works in the Basque town. He already had the intention of undergoing a check-up with his dentist last February after a trip to Paris, where she attended an event with Mario Vargas Llosa and had a private dinner with Emmanuel Macron.
