The director general of the Spanish Office of Climate Change (OECC), Valvanera Ulargui , looked, yesterday, during a meeting with journalists, the main results on the evaluation of the first National Plan of Adaptation to Climate Change (PNACC).
This review was initiated, formally, in February 2018, with the establishment of a advisory group consisting of experts from different fields : european institutions, General State Administration, autonomous communities, or the academic sector and non-governmental.
The document has been analyzed, in addition, within the project Life Shara, focused on the construction of a society better adapted to the warming of the Earth thanks to the cooperation of all the involved actors to generate more knowledge about this environmental threat and to increase the social awareness . The Biodiversity Foundation (FB), the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, coordinates the aforementioned program.
Various complementary sources, which develop their professional activity in the field of adaptation in Spain, have contributed through their opinions and suggestions, collected from surveys and in-depth interviews, to refine the results obtained by the group of experts. The majority of respondents considered urgent to act against the risks arising from climate change , with an index of the urgency of 8.7 on a scale of 10, he stressed Ulargui.
The general director of the OECC also took the occasion to outline the steps to be followed for the update of the National Plan of Adaptation to Climate Change (PNACC-2), then the following should cover the time horizon 2021-2030.
The PNACC was adopted in 2006, was a pioneer in Europe : it was the second planning document in the field of adaptation at the national level, after the Adaptation Strategy of Finland (2005), recalls the FB in a note.
The PNACC-2, for its part, will incorporate aspects emerging in the field of adaptation to climate change, such as human rights, gender equity, the interaction between mitigation and adaptation, or the influence of social and demographic factors on the greater or lesser vulnerability to this phenomenon, for example. We have made 38 recommendations for its development.
The current Plan facilitates, fruit of the work of the OECC, the State Meteorological Agency, the Higher Council for Scientific Research and the FB, projections regionalized climate change to different emission scenarios in Spain throughout this century which can be accessed in the following link.
