A New York appeals court on Thursday, April 25, overturned the conviction for rape and sexual assault of former Hollywood star producer Harvey Weinstein in 2020, and ordered a new trial.
The court of appeal found that procedural errors had been made during this trial, which constituted a victory for the movement
Weinstein, 72, is serving a 23-year sentence in a New York prison after being convicted of criminal sexual acts for forcibly performing sex on a television and film production assistant in 2006 and of rape in the third degree for an attack on an actress in 2013.
Weinstein appealed his 2020 rape and sexual assault conviction to New York’s highest court last fall.
He was also convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 of another rape and sentenced to 16 years in prison. Weinstein was acquitted in Los Angeles on charges involving one of the women who testified in New York.
