Cologne (dpa / lnw) – The ADAC in NRW expects many traffic jams on the motorways in North Rhine-Westphalia on the coming long Ascension Day weekend. “There are practically no longer any corona restrictions on holiday traffic. If the high fuel prices and cost of living don’t put a damper on the desire to travel, the level of traffic jams will approach the time before Corona,” said ADAC traffic expert Roman Suthold on Monday.

The ADAC expects the most traffic jams on Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. when commuters and short vacationers meet. In 2019, the Wednesday before Ascension Day was one of the busiest days of the year with 1,335 reports of traffic jams in NRW. The ADAC emphasized that the motorways in the greater Cologne area and in the Ruhr area are particularly at risk of congestion. Patience is particularly important on construction sites.

When the weather is nice, the ADAC also expects delays from day trippers on Ascension Day, Saturday and Sunday on the city arterial roads to the local recreation areas. On Sunday afternoon, the return traffic will ensure full motorways. The ADAC expects little traffic in NRW on Friday.

According to ADAC, in the last year before the corona pandemic, 2019, there were 2,081 traffic jams and slowdowns in NRW from Wednesday to Sunday with a total length of 2,481 kilometers.
