Hürth (dpa / lnw) – After an operation due to leaking hydrochloric acid, the Ville-Ost rest area on the A1 motorway in the direction of Cologne is closed. Around 100 square meters of flooring would have to be removed there, said a spokesman for the Hürth fire department on Wednesday. The surface will be milled. Driving is not possible.

A leak was discovered on a hydrochloric acid tanker truck at the service area on Monday morning. According to the fire department, between three and five liters of hydrochloric acid flowed out every minute.

The autobahn was temporarily closed, and almost 200 firefighters from the Rhein-Erft district, from Cologne and from the Düren district were on duty. The situation returned to normal after about ten hours. According to the fire department, the escaping hydrochloric acid could be collected. The dangerous cargo was pumped over.
