Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) – Around 4.1 million people left a hospital in North Rhine-Westphalia last year after inpatient treatment. This was reported by the state statistics office IT.NRW on Friday in Düsseldorf. The number also includes newborns. Compared to 2020, 1.1 percent more people were treated in a clinic in NRW. However, it was 12.7 percent fewer than before the start of the corona pandemic in 2019 with 4.7 million people at the time.
In 2021, diseases of the circulatory system – 618,000 cases – were the most common reason for inpatient admission, IT.NRW reported. A look at the individual diagnoses shows that in most cases it was about heart failure – 97,900 patients received medical care for this reason. The second most common diagnosis was atrial flutter or fibrillation with 77,100 cases, followed by psychological complaints and behavioral disorders caused by alcohol with 53,400 cases.
