Cologne (dpa / lnw) – The meeting of fans of 1. FC Köln and OGC Nice during the European Cup game on Thursday evening was mostly peaceful. Emergency services could have prevented an impending argument between the club supporters, the police said. Before the start of the football game, the officials pushed back the aggressive Cologne residents on a meadow in front of the stadium. Apart from a dispute between German and French fans in Cologne’s old town, there were no confrontations.

The Cologne team’s first leg in southern France almost two months ago was overshadowed by riots and fights in the stands. There had been several injuries. A fan had fallen from the upper tier of the audience. On Thursday evening, however, carnival hits and Rhenish folklore dominated events in the arena before the game. 1. FC Köln did not get more than 2: 2 (0: 2) against OGC Nice on Thursday evening and was eliminated from the Europa Conference League.
