Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) – In Düsseldorf, several thousand people took to the streets against Turkish military operations in northern Iraq on Saturday. The association “Confederation of Kurdistan Communities in Germany” had called for the protest marches in the NRW state capital. The participants were in two demonstration trains in the city center and on the Rheinwiese. According to the police, the demonstration and the subsequent rally in the Rheinpark were peaceful.
The Turkish government in Ankara regularly carries out military offensives in northern Iraq against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is also considered a terrorist organization in the USA and Europe. In the recent past, there had been allegations that Turkish armed forces had used chemical weapons against PKK positions in a military operation. The Turkish Defense Ministry vehemently rejected the allegations.
