Münster (dpa / lnw) – The withdrawal of water from the Ems is also prohibited in the Steinfurt and Warendorf districts with immediate effect. The district government of Münster issued a corresponding decree. It is valid until the end of September, as the authority announced on Thursday. The reason is the persistent drought and the water level of 89 centimeters in the Ems in Greven. The long-term average is 157 centimetres. Since the district government in Detmold had also banned the uncontrolled withdrawal of water from the Ems by residents, the ban on residents now applies to the entire course of the river in North Rhine-Westphalia.
At the beginning of July, the district of Coesfeld called on citizens not to take water from rivers and streams. The use of pumps was banned because of the low water levels. The authorities in the Minden-Lübbecke district called on people in June to hold back from filling pools and watering gardens.
