Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) – From the point of view of the Education and Science Union (GEW), teachers are overwhelmed with the corona test rules for the new school year in North Rhine-Westphalia. “The potential for conflict is inevitable,” said state chairwoman Ayla Çelik on Monday in Düsseldorf.

If corona symptoms first appear in school and there are no current negative findings, teachers can suggest a test at school, but not force it, as School Minister Dorothee Feller (CDU) explained last week. However, school principals are authorized to temporarily exclude students from class “in the event of imminent danger”.

Such a prognosis, whether a child has Corona or just the flu, is too much to ask, said Çelik. Imposing a test on students on this basis is “a tightrope walk” for teachers that should not be imposed on them. “Because a suggestion can quickly be interpreted as pressure or manipulation.”

The educational partnership with the parents will be affected by the new regulations both in schools and in day-care centers – but above all in schools, “because we are assuming vague regulations here that are based on insight,” criticized the trade unionist. A change in the Corona Protection Ordinance will soon allow children with typical corona symptoms to be excluded from daycare in the future. Çelik warned that this would shift the social conflicts surrounding Corona to daycare centers and schools.
