Before the soccer World Cup in Qatar, the criticism does not stop – above all because of the controversial venue. Meanwhile, public viewing hardly seems to be an issue in NRW. A look at the cities.
Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) – In many cities in North Rhine-Westphalia there should be no major public viewing events for the football World Cup in winter. “The city of Cologne is not planning any public viewing or other events on the occasion of the 2022 World Cup,” said a spokeswoman for the city of the German Press Agency. In addition, there have been no private applications in Cologne to carry out public viewing during the 2022 World Cup in the city area.
The cathedral city is not alone in this, other major cities are also doing without. No public broadcasts of the games are planned in the state capital Düsseldorf either, the city said. In the Ruhr area, too, many people have to do without watching the pack at the Winter World Cup: Nothing is planned in Dortmund and there are no major events in Bochum either. “All we know is that some restaurateurs will show the World Cup matches,” said a spokesman for Bochum Marketing GmbH. The cities did not provide information as to the specific reasons why no events were planned.
On November 20th, the World Cup begins in Qatar. For the first time, a final round will be played in winter, which causes displeasure among many. Above all, however, the tournament is criticized because the emirate is accused of massive violations of human rights in the construction of the stadiums and the organization.
