Plastic waste in particular causes problems in the water bodies. It is now being collected again on many riverbanks. The low water could help the volunteers.
Düsseldorf / Mainz (dpa / lnw) – Thousands of volunteers are expected this Saturday for a day-long garbage collection campaign on many river banks in Germany. According to the initiators of “Rhine Clean Up” (RCU), the currently low water level in many areas could help to reach areas that have not been accessible in recent years. You speak of the “biggest garbage collection campaign in Central Europe”, which is planned on the Rhine, but also on the Ruhr, Lippe, Emscher, Düssel and Moselle.
Around 40,000 individuals and 500 groups were expected unless there was heavy rain that day. The main problem is plastic waste – found in large quantities and in all forms from bottles to small debris on the banks.
