A Salinas police officer was killed and a bullet struck him in the head during a traffic stop.
According to Salinas Police Chief Roberto Filice, Officer Jorge David Alvarado made a traffic stop at Griffin Street and East Market around 10:41 on Friday.
Officials didn’t provide any details about how the traffic stop became a shooting.
Alvarado, 30 was a five-year veteran, according Salinas police.
Kimberly Craig, Salinas Mayor, stated that Alvarado was the first officer to be killed in the line of duty since nearly 80 years.
Craig stated, “Our community is devastated and our police department are devastated.” “My request to you, the community: Please support and embrace our police force right now. They are in pain.”
According to Filice, the suspect shooter is currently in police custody.
Filice stated that the investigation into the incident was handed over to Jeannine M. Pacioni, Monterey County District Attorney. This is standard procedure in police-involved shooters.
Pacioni stated that no details about the investigation would be made public before it is complete.
