U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Detroit Metropolitan Airport found over $60,000 in cash hidden within a bundle of menstrual pads at a passenger’s bags on Feb. 3.
The undeclared money was bundled within envelopes hidden within the bundle, CBP officials said. The girl had told officers she was just carrying $1,000.
The passenger was led to Amsterdam if the concealed cash was discovered.
The officers seized the cash since the girl violated money reporting needs, officials explained. Anyone who does not report that the money faces civil penalties or seizure of their cash.
Robert Larkin, port manager, stated CBP enforces the money reporting principles to be able to fight money laundering and other criminal tactics.
“I am pleased with our officers as well as the job that they do to disrupt money smuggling operations and prohibited actions every day,” Larkin said.
CBP officers seized over $93.3 million in money in 2020, according to the agency.
