Antonio Hernando has held the status of PSOE deputy in Congress for three months. After the constitution of the new Government, he has resigned from his duties to once again be deputy director of the Cabinet of the Presidency of Pedro Sánchez.
The former parliamentarian had to resign from this same position – which he had held since 2021 – in order to be able to appear on his party’s electoral lists as number one for Almería. He has now taken the opposite path, leaving his seat in the Lower House vacant since both positions are incompatible.
As The Objective has reported and socialist sources have confirmed, Hernando has presented his resignation this Wednesday to take effect on November 28. That day the Council of Ministers will be held in which his appointment will be approved.
Given the poor prospects for the general elections that his party had after the debacle in the regional and municipal elections, Sánchez chose to protect the senior officials he trusted with a guaranteed seat in Congress. In addition to 14 of his 17 ministers, he placed other senior officials, such as his deputy director of the Cabinet, in starting positions on the lists.
The President of the Government and Hernando were close when they both worked in the leadership of the PSOE, but they distanced themselves after the crisis that caused the expulsion of the current general secretary of the party in October 2016. The relationship was not restored – at least publicly – until five years later. years later, when the former deputy joined the La Moncloa team.
Óscar López was also a part of that nucleus, reconfirmed this Wednesday as Director of the Presidency’s Cabinet, a position he held after the departure of Iván Redondo also in 2021. The three friends ended up meeting again in the Government’s engine room and, for now, They all remain aboard the same ship.
