The tenor placid Domingo participated tonight in the recital of the Great Solidarity Gala of Zarzuela for the benefit of Cáritas, chaired by Queen Dona Sofia and celebrated in the National Auditorium.
Sunday was part of a cast in which the singers Carmen Solís, Marina Monzo, Nancy Fabiola Herrera, Cristina Class, Celso Albelo, Jorge de León and up to 200 artists who played pieces of the repertoire of the Zarzuela and … and even
Here, the news would have been more or less routine, at least until a couple of years ago.
But, in 2022, the alignment of those three own names, Plácido Domingo, Doña Sofia and National Auditorium, has a new significance.
Plácido Domingo’s performance was the third time he sings in Spain after the accusation of sexual harassment of several cast partners, some identified and other anonymous were made known in the press.
Plácido Domingo never had to respond criminally for those allegations but he declared before an AGMA commission, the United States Opera singers’ union.
In that session, the tenor spanish asked for a formal apologies for their behavior, a fact that the Government of Spain used as an argument to veto it in the seasons of public or semi-public institutions.
Sunday, according to that reading, he was a stalker confessed that he should not be hired by the institutions.
The singer, on the other hand, argued that apologizing for a private behavior is not the same as recognizing any kind of crime.
At that point, the defense of the presumption of innocence of the singer or his public signage became political options.
In June of last year, Sunday returned again on a Spanish scenario (also then the national auditorium) in another gala of private and beneficial initiative, contracted by the Foundation Excellence in favor of Red Cross responds.
The president of the Community of Madrid Isabel Díaz Ayuso went to A Quel recital, in which Sunday was an absolute protagonist on stage.
Ayuso was applauded by the public, who read that the presence of her was a challenge to the veto of the government and that she also ovacked the singer.
On the return of summer, the singer reappeared in Mérida, at a concert at the Roman Theater, hired by another private promoter, the Stone & Music Festival.
That day there was also absolute applause for the tenor although a picket was manifested at the entrance of the enclosure with posters that demanded the cancellation of the show.
Yesterday, in Madrid, the presence of Dona Sofia had an apolitical justification (chairs the Board of Cáritas) but also the air of a public support.
In 2018, before her fall in disgrace of her, Dona Sofia referred to the singer as the “friend of her” of her.
Yesterday there was applause for everyone.
The atmosphere was conducive.
