Gone were the scarves and winter coats and out came the shorts and sleeveless tops on Friday, when the state saw temperatures that ranged up to 30 degrees above normal for this date in February.
A record was set in Newark, where the high of 74 degrees edged out the old mark of 73 for Feb. 24. All-time highs were also reported in Trenton, where the mercury hit 75, and in Allentown, Pa., where the temperature reached 77 degrees. The Trenton and Allentown highs both beat out the previous record by one degree, according to the National Weather Service.
Rain and colder temps on tap for the weekend
Philadelphia’s high of 74 tied the record and in Atlantic City, temperatures reached a balmy 71, far warmer than normal but still four degrees shy of the record.
Hamilton recorded a daytime high of 78 degrees, while New Brunswick, Sicklerville and Walpack all reached 77, the New Jersey Weather & Climate Network at Rutgers University reported. Hillsborough, Somerville ands West Deptford were among several towns reporting a daytime high of 76 degrees.
The extraordinary run of warm, sunny weather won’t last. Rain is in the forecast for Saturday and the forecast calls for more seasonal highs in the mid-40s Sunday.
