Former first lady of the United States Rosalynn Carter has died at the age of 96 in Plains, Georgia, the Carter Center announced in a press release. On Friday, the foundation which manages the image and legacy of former Democratic President Jimmy Carter announced that she would receive palliative care at home.
“She passed away peacefully, with her family by her side,” the foundation said. The couple, married since 1946, were forging what they both described as a “full partnership.”
Throughout the political career of her husband, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, Rosalynn Carter chose to focus on mental health and the issues of older adults. In 2007, she returned to Washington to push Congress to improve mental health care coverage.
“Rosalynn has been my equal partner in everything I have accomplished,” said the former Democratic president, quoted in the text. The 99-year-old former president and Nobel Peace Prize winner has been treated in palliative care since February 2023.
