Leipzig (dpa/sn) – On New Year’s Eve, the police in Leipzig registered 39 crimes. Most of the time it was about unauthorized fireworks, but also about property damage, bodily harm and violations of the Narcotics Act, the police said on Sunday. However, no one was arrested and there were no injured officers. The emergency services were repeatedly confronted with cases in which people were injured when handling pyrotechnics. In one case, a 17-year-old died in hospital from his injuries.
Meetings with elevators in the evening in the east of the city with up to 110 participants and after midnight at the Connewitzer Kreuz in the south were said to have been peaceful. However, later there was another gathering at the Connewitzer Kreuz. Rubbish was set on fire in several places on the street. The fire was extinguished with water cannons. Pyrotechnics and other objects were thrown at the emergency services and police vehicles. Service vehicles were damaged.
