Halle (dpa/sa) – A total of 1179 apartments and thus 75,600 square meters of living space were demolished in Saxony-Anhalt in 2021. This mainly affected residential buildings that were built before 1991, as the State Statistical Office announced on Friday. The main reason for the demolition of residential buildings was the construction of new residential buildings at 50 percent. When demolishing non-residential buildings, on the other hand, the aim was mostly to create open spaces. Only in 16 percent of the cases was a residential building erected where a building used for other purposes had previously stood. However, how the resulting open spaces are then used is not recorded. Only roads or public parking lots will definitely not be built on them, as a spokeswoman for the State Statistical Office said.
