Dessau-Roßlau (dpa/sa) – On the Day of Poverty, the President of the Evangelical Church in Anhalt, Joachim Liebig, is distributing soup this Monday. On the Dessau train station forecourt, the campaign under the motto “Eating once fills you up twice” is intended to draw attention to the growing poverty, as the regional church announced in advance.

A bowl of soup will cost 2.50 euros. Guests would be asked to drop the same amount into the collection boxes as a donation. It should be a symbolic contribution so that a person affected by poverty can also have enough to eat on this day. The donations would benefit the Dessau station mission.

The action should also show what help churches and diaconia have already provided, it said. Thanks to donations and volunteers, church and diaconal institutions could help people in poverty, for example with food banks and warming rooms, clothing stores and children’s clubs, railway station missions and advice centers.
