Halle (dpa/sa) – A case of monkeypox has been detected in Halle for the first time. The person must now go into a 21-day quarantine at home, the city said on Thursday. No information was given on gender or health status.

A first case of monkeypox was detected in Saxony-Anhalt in May. A man from Jerichower Land was affected. After a trip, he complained about complaints that the infection had been detected by a PCR test. The responsible health department ordered domestic isolation.

Monkeypox is considered a less serious disease compared to smallpox, which has been eradicated since 1980. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the pathogen is usually transmitted from person to person through close physical contact. Experts assume that the outbreak can be contained. The risk to the general public is still considered to be low. Symptoms, which include fever and a rash, usually go away on their own within a few weeks, but can lead to complications and, very rarely, death in some people.
