Hohengöhren (dpa/sa) – A forest fire has broken out in the Stendal district. A police spokesman said early Thursday evening that around 50 hectares of forest were on fire near Hohengöhren near Schönhausen. The area is close to the Brandenburg border. The fire is not under control and is spreading further north, it said. The federal highway leading past and the surrounding towns are still far enough away. So far there has been neither a traffic warning nor a warning to the population regarding the smoke.
It wasn’t immediately clear how many firefighters were on duty. The police assumed an estimated 150 to 200 firefighters. Police forces were also on site. In the district of Stendal, the highest level of forest fire risk is currently five.
