Bitterfeld-Wolfen (dpa/sa) – Thanks to the patience and financial strength of his grandmother, a 39-year-old escaped prison again. The man had been checked by the police at the train station in Bitterfeld in Saxony-Anhalt, officials said on Thursday. The investigation showed that the man was wanted on an arrest warrant. The 39-year-old had previously been sentenced to a fine of 3,000 euros or 150 days imprisonment for theft. He neither paid the required fine nor did he face the penalty. In July, prosecutors issued a warrant for his arrest.
When officials explained the situation to him on Wednesday, the man tried to flee, but didn’t get very far. The patrol finally took him to the office in Dessau, where he was given the opportunity to raise the required amount by telephone – initially without success. His rescue came during the subsequent handover to the prison officers: his grandmother paid the sum of 3,000 euros. In June she had already paid a fine of 2,000 euros to keep her grandson out of jail. So the 39-year-old was free again thanks to his grandmother.
