Magdeburg (dpa/sa) – In order to further increase the number of police officers in Saxony-Anhalt, more police candidates are to be hired in the coming years. After 360 recruitments last year, there should be 440 this year, and then 550 each in 2023 and 2024, as the Ministry of the Interior announced on Wednesday in Magdeburg. “In order to reach the target number of 7,000 police officers in 2026, further efforts are required in view of the demographic development,” said the Ministry of the Interior in Magdeburg on Wednesday.
The number of school leavers has fallen significantly in recent years, and young people are desperately needed in many professional groups. This year, as of June 24, there were 2,450 applications for the police profession. Similar numbers existed in 2015 before a steep increase to 4,675 applications in 2017. After that there were fewer applications every year. In 2021 it was 2366, as it was called. The “Youth Manhunt” campaign has been in existence for years.
Interested parties – especially those with a migration background and without German as their mother tongue – should now be supported in preparing for the aptitude test. Anyone interested in studying or training at the police college should be able to take part in a preparatory course. This includes special language training. “The aim of the preparatory measure is to improve the personal suitability of the applicants and to increase the diversity in the state police and the proportion of colleagues with a migration background,” the ministry said.
The state signs a cooperation agreement with an educational institution in Halle, from September there will initially be 15 places available in a six-month preparatory course.
