Bitterfeld-Wolfen (dpa/sa) – According to the city, the construction of a large battery cell factory by the Chinese manufacturer Farasis in Bitterfeld-Wolfen is on hold for the time being. According to the current status, the project with the targeted investment volume of 600 million euros will not be implemented, said Steve Bruder, head of the economic development department of the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen, the German Press Agency. The “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung” had previously reported.

However, according to Bruder, a settlement by Farasis in Bitterfeld-Wolfen has not completely collapsed. The group has acquired an area in the city’s technology park. Here is a smaller project under discussion. As a first step, the production of battery modules is planned on around a third of the originally planned area. “That means you have the cells delivered from China and then produce the modules here.” In the future, however, it is conceivable that battery cells could also be manufactured in Bitterfeld-Wolfen at a later date.

The Daimler supplier Farasis had actually planned to produce battery cells in Bitterfeld-Wolfen from 2022. Around 600 jobs should be created. The location was also to become the Group’s new European headquarters. There had already been reports in the past year that the project was being put to the test. Farasis was founded in California in 2002 and is now based in Ganzhou, China. The company has its German headquarters in Frickenhausen near Esslingen. The company initially did not comment on request.
