Magdeburg/Nebra (dpa/sa) – The state of Saxony-Anhalt wants to open another branch of the central contact point for asylum seekers. As the Ministry of the Interior announced on Wednesday, the youth hostel in Nebra (Burgenlandkreis) was rented to temporarily accommodate asylum seekers. The preparations have largely been completed, and the branch office can probably be put into operation this week.
The facility is said to be used over the winter months until March 2023. The state has recently gradually expanded the capacities of the initial reception center in Halberstadt and put additional branch offices into operation because more asylum seekers have been arriving in Germany since September. This should relieve the municipalities when they are admitted, since the capacities there are also increasingly being used to capacity, the ministry said.
The Nebra facility has 136 places. The property will be guarded around the clock by a security guard. Social care for asylum seekers is also guaranteed, said the house of Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang (CDU). In addition, only asylum seekers who had previously tested negative for the corona virus would be accommodated in the transitional quarters.
So far this year, more than 5,300 asylum seekers have been registered in Saxony-Anhalt. After their arrival, the people are first accommodated in the central contact point for asylum seekers and from there distributed to the rural districts and urban districts. In addition, around 29,100 war refugees from the Ukraine have been admitted to Saxony-Anhalt so far this year.
